PMB fisherman caught a 47kg mussel cracker in Durban
Updated | By Shanice Pillay
Devan Naicker from Pietermaritzburg caught a 47kg muscle cracker from the shores of Durban. We had an exclusive interview with the sea enthusiast.
Fishing since the age of 16, Naicker says it's an ideal way to de-stress, as well as a great way to learn perseverance. The avid 40-year-old fisherman has always had a passion for fishing and has fished on the shores of Richards Bay and Rocky Bay. He currently works for the Department of Education and uses his fishing skills to explore the deep blue seas.
Naicker wishes to one day own a boat of his own. He dreams of taking his kids and other people out to show them the beautiful sea, and teach them about fishing. He has offered his assistance to help blind kids go to and from school and hopes to take them on a trip, too.
The biggest fish caught in Durban by sales rep fisherman Emile Govender last year was also a muscle cracker, weighing in at 42kg. Naicker's catch eclipses that.
We had an opportunity for an exclusive interview with Naicker, who gave a little insight into his exciting catch:
- Tell us a bit about yourself...
I've been fishing for the past 22 years. I lived and grew up in PMB and always loved fishing.
- When and where did you catch the fish?
The fish was caught a week ago. We launched off the Durban Harbor and the fish was caught somewhere between the harbor and off Durban shores. Only the skipper would be able to confirm the exact coordinates.
- What type of fish was it and what was the official weight?
The fish is known as a muscle cracker and weighs an unofficial amount of 47kg.
- Is fishing your occupation or a hobby?
Fishing has been a hobby of mine ever since I can remember. It helps me to de-stress and teaches me perseverance.
- What did you do with the fish after catching it?
After my amazing catch, I had to bring it home to show my family and friends, which I shared with them.
- How do you feel about all the attention that has been drawn to the catch?
The amount of love and support, as well as congratulations I received, has been overwhelming and I am truly grateful to all who have reached out to speak to me.
- What popular spots do you frequent to fish?
I've fished at Richards Bay, Rocky Bay, and Durban shores, which I love.
