Officers arrested after assisting in blue-light hijacking

SAPS officers have been arrested after CCTV footage showed them assisting in a blue-light hijacking.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) made headlines on March 20, 2025, with the arrest of four suspects, including two police officers, linked to a disturbing wave of blue-light hijackings in Ekurhuleni.
This shocking turn of events has raised questions about the trust South Africans place in their law enforcement.
It all started with a CCTV video that left many stunned and enraged. The footage, shared by crime activist Yusuf Abramjee on his X account, shows a chilling scene.
On March 4, two security officers are pulled over by two traffic officers and one uniformed police officer.
The officer initially asks for the passenger’s Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSiRA) permit, which leads to a confusing exchange.
The situation quickly escalates when two unidentified men suddenly appear, hijack the vehicle, and threaten the officers.

What’s even more alarming is that the police officer who initially stopped the vehicle seems to be engaging with the hijackers, potentially assisting them in their crime.
The hijackers proceed to steal the security officers’ firearms and take control of the vehicle.
It’s a chilling moment that has South Africans questioning how deep the issue of corruption and criminal activity runs within their own police force.

The arrests of two police officers on March 20 were the result of a dedicated investigation following blue-light hijackings in Kempton Park, Gauteng.
SAPS acted on crucial information and were able to link these officers to the criminal activities.
While the exact identities of the hijackers in the video remain unclear, the fact that two officers are involved in such a brazen act of criminal assistance has left many in disbelief.
With crime and corruption already a serious concern in South Africa, incidents like these only deepen the divide between the public and the police force.
