Nelson Mandela was a powerful man who has left a legacy that will be remembered for the rest of time.

Towards the latter part of his life, he owned a house in Houghton. This was one of the final places he called home.

In remembrance of the man we are proud to call 'The Father of our Nation', we take a look at how this house is currently shaping up.

Situated in Johannesburg, this once luxurious home just a few metres from 13th Avenue is now described as “a ghost house”.

Several news outlets share that the reason this home stands deserted and neglected is due to family disputes.

Mandela’s will states that his kids can live rent-free in the home. However, Madiba’s grandchildren abandoned the home after conflict between them and the Nelson Mandela Trust. In 2020, the grandchildren stopped paying utility bills as it became too costly.

This grandiose home pays homage to Mandela’s walk to freedom. It once hosted some of the world’s most powerful leaders and was known for its elegant touches. One of the rooms in this home was even modelled after a cell in Robben Island!

According to TimesLive, the electric gate in the home is seemingly broken and portions of the roof fascia are missing or collapsing. The tennis court is crumbling and the tiled roof of one of the outbuildings is sagging. Overgrown lawns, rubbish, and dirt plague this revered home.
