Midmar Mile champion Matt Meyer owns the #HotSeat
Updated | By Sky Tshabalala
Chad Ho was going for his 8th win in a field that featured a 10km Olympic champion, but it was rising star Matthew Meyer who took first place!
The 2017 Aquelle Midmar Mile was probably the most anticipated in years. Chad Ho, who had won the Midmar Mile seven times in a row, lost to young star Matthew Meyer.
If you speak to Chad, he will tell you that he was very aware of Meyer, as he had pushed him all the way last year. What made the rivalry even more interesting was the fact that they train together.
On 12 February a new star was born when Meyer beat Ho to win his maiden crown at Midmar.
Meyer went to the Rio Olympics in 2016 at the age of 18, but went unnoticed as he failed to reach the finals in the pool.
He likes the 800m and 1500m swims, which he wants to focus on in the future.
Schooled at Clifton College, he is a massive fan of East Coast Breakfast and tells us he dreamt of being interviewed on East Coast Radio before it happened.
At only 18 he sure is a force to be reckoned with and, boy, was he a fun interview!
