"I'm not dead!": Man turns to crime to prove he is still alive

Was this really his only option?

We've heard about people stealing identities, but this is the first time we have heard about a death certificate being issued incorrectly.

"Baburam Bhil, a 40-year-old man from Rajasthan’s Mithora village, India, had long been trying to convince authorities that he was still alive after they issued a death certificate in his name." (Oddity Central)

The man was afraid that if nothing were done to revoke the incorrect death declaration, then he would lose his properties. He approached the authorities and the elders in his village to correct the error, but nothing worked.

Baburam came to the unlikely conclusion that committing a serious crime was the only way to get the attention of authorities. One thing is for certain, he took the saying, 'Go big or go home', a bit too seriously, and not in a good way.

"On July 19, he grabbed a knife and a petrol bottle and began terrorising a local school. After entering the Chuli Bera Dharana School, the desperate man proceeded to seriously injure two teachers, acting Headmaster Hardayal and teacher Suresh Kumar, as well as a parent. According to a police report, Baburam Bhil also took several students and teachers hostage until law enforcement arrived and arrested him." (Oddity Central)

Baburam told the authorities that due to his numerous failed attempts at getting his death certificate annulled, he felt the only way to move forward was to commit a severe crime and get arrested so that the authorities could realise their mistake.

Even though he has been arrested, the police have announced an investigation into his case. It seems this is not as uncommon as we all might assume and has happened in India before.

"Vio News reported that in November of last year, a 70-year-old man was seen walking through Agra with a placard that read ‘I’m alive’ after his death certificate was wrongfully issued." (Oddity Central)
