Updated | By Breakfast with Darren Maule / Lilitha Bodlani
We've got some unfortunate news for all diesel motorists.
South Africa has long been a nation heavily reliant on diesel fuel for various industries, including transportation and power generation.
However, recent developments in both global and local contexts are indicating stormy times ahead for diesel in the country.

According to Business Tech, motorists in SA are on track for petrol price relief in July, but diesel prices are going in the opposite direction.
From environmental concerns to shifting energy paradigms, the future of diesel seems uncertain, and South Africans must brace themselves for a significant transformation.
One of the major challenges facing diesel in SA is its detrimental impact on the environment.
Diesel combustion releases harmful pollutants such as nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) into the atmosphere, contributing to air pollution and negative health effects.
With growing awareness of climate change and increasing calls for cleaner energy sources, diesel's days as a dominant fuel are numbered.

According to Investec chief economist Annabel Bishop, motorists are on track for a petrol price drop in July, which again will be boding very well for the outlook inflation.
So the latest data from the Central Energy Fund shows diesel is currently showing an under-recovery of around 13 to 18 cents per litre, pointing to a price hike for July.
The global shift toward renewable energy sources and the electrification of transport is another factor that threatens diesel's position.
Countries worldwide are striving to reduce their carbon footprint and promote sustainable practices.
Electric vehicles (EVs) are rapidly gaining popularity, and with advancements in battery technology and charging infrastructure, they offer a viable alternative to diesel-powered vehicles.
As the world moves toward greener transportation, South Africa cannot afford to be left behind.
