#LifeHacksByKeri: Sponge on, sponge off

Bacteria and germs breed in kitchens, so it's not only important to keep the kitchen clean but to keep your cleaning utensils clean too. This life hack is for all the obsessive cleaners.
Dishwashing sponges are something we use every day to clean our dishes, but we rarely clean our sponges.
These little helpers touch raw egg, meat, countertops, and who knows what else. So, I asked around to find out exactly what to do to get these kitchen aides clean.
It turns out that the microwave is the simplest, most effective option.

According to American Science, “the scientists reported that simply microwaving sponges (completely wet, never dry) for two minutes at high power killed or inactivated over 99 percent of pathogens in sponges that had been soaked in a “witch’s brew” of fecal bacteria (yes, that’s poo), viruses, protozoan parasites and bacterial spores.”
These researchers recommend “zapping” kitchen sponges every other day or so. Watch out though – the zapped sponges will be hot and steamy, so should be left in the microwave for a few minutes to cool. Obviously, this method won’t work if the sponges contain any metal.

If you don’t have a microwave, soaking your sponges in vinegar and/or bleach for an hour also works, or putting your sponge into the dishwasher for a full cycle.
