Keri's Wellness Wednesday: Vodka is great for cocktails, even better for frizzy hair
Updated | By Keri Miller
This is a hack I found that really works, that’s if you can get the vodka away from your mouth and onto your hair.
These days it’s not just ladies wearing their hair long, I mean, man-buns are a very real thing and living in KZN, so is the humidity… and the FRIZZ. Here is a solution, and yes it involves vodka!
Wait… Vodka?
You Will Need:
- 1 tbsp Vodka (if you never have alcohol at home, you can use apple cider vinegar but … it smells like apple cider vinegar)
- 2 cups Water
Processing Time
5 minutes
What to do?
1. Put the water and vodka into a jug
2. Wash and condition your hair (with your usual product).
Tip: look for a paraben free and SLS free shampoo and conditioner
3. Pour the vodka/water mix through your hair as a final rinse.
4. Let your hair air-dry.
And viola! You can do this twice a month to see best results.

Why This Works?
Experts say: "Frizz is caused due to risen hair cuticles that let moisture into the hair shaft, causing them to swell up. Vodka’s astringent properties tackle this by sealing the cuticles and ensuring that your hair shaft remains smooth.”
Did you know: Vodka’s low pH and caustic properties make it excellent for hair care, besides making the base of a great cocktail. When talking about hair care, vodka hosts these benefits:
- Strengthens the hair follicles (by forcing your scalp to contract).
- Balances the scalp’s pH levels.
- Normalizes sebum production (great for those with oily hair).
- Boosts scalp health which reduces ‘hair fall’.

- And my favourite… It seals the cuticles on the hair shaft, preventing frizz and adding shine.
