Keri takes a sho't left to Ixopo at a beautiful retreat centre
Updated | By Keri Miller
BRC Buddhist retreat centre is internationally acclaimed. Keri got to spend some time there.
Nestled in the beautiful Ufafa Valley in Ixopo, the Buddhist Retreat Centre was named a national heritage site and one of the top 10 retreats in the world by CNN.
I have heard for years about this retreat centre but was nervous because I presumed a Buddhist retreat centre would mean sitting cross-legged in meditation for hours at a time. How wrong was I?!
Every retreat is something a little different - art, cooking, writing, yoga, tai chi, poetry - there is something for everyone. This space is interdenominational, but you are asked to follow the five Buddhist principals while there:
NO killing of any creature
NO drinking or drugs
No meat
NO lying
NO sex

Your price includes three incredible vegetarian dishes per day and two tea times. The grounds are some of the most beautiful I have ever seen - the epitome of calm.
What I love about this place is that even though it is an NGO, they still support the whole community of the Ufafa Valley and the Woza Moya Foundation.
And, yes, there is reception for those who are nervous for a weekend without a phone. However, I would suggest trying your best to turn off the phone as often as possible.
The accommodation varies from dorms to beautiful cottages, and depending on your budget, you can live in tranquil simplicity or absolute luxury. Either way, one of the world's best views!
This place gets my DKS stamp of approval!
