How to ensure your kitchen doesn't put you in a filthy mood
Updated | By Keri Miller
I don’t know anyone who has ‘doing dishes’ on their list of things they love to do. That's why I've got some hacks to solve that!
If you’re eating/drinking there’s obviously cleaning to do. Here’s a good reason why you should stop putting it off and keep that sink empty and clean.
When you think of a kitchen sink you think of something you clean in not something you clean. However, there is an ‘organisation guru’ named Marla Cilley aka the Fly Lady who swears that a sparkling kitchen sink is the key to a happy you and a way more organised kitchen.
But why? Apparently getting your sink to look brand new is the best way to keep yourself motivated to keep it clean, so you’re much less likely to let the dishes pile up and your family (maybe not your kids) will follow suit.

Fly Lady’s process is an extensive one—read the whole thing here—but the basic steps are as follows:
- Remove everything from the sink and fill it with very hot water. Add a cup of bleach and let it sit for an hour.
- Remove the stopper with tongs, drain the sink, and rinse it thoroughly.
- Hit it with a powdered cleaner like Ajax. Scrub it good and rinse well.
- Take a butter knife and clean out under the rim of the sink. If you have never done this, it will probably be very gross, but that’s okay. Rinse everything once more.
- Clean around the taps with an old toothbrush.
- Spray with window cleaner and give it all a vigorous shine.

You now have a sink so pretty it’s instagrammable and you will think twice before just sitting a dirty dish/cup down and starting the stockpile all over again. And apparently seeing a clean sink area is an instant relief.
