A few weeks ago, Watts stepped down indefinitely from 'Carte Blanche' due to his battle with cancer.
He had spent over 35 years on the show and had been involved in many stories that shaped South Africa's landscape.
East Coast Breakfast host Darren Maule remembers meeting the veteran journalist - and his first encounter was truly fantastic.
"He was a charming man and one of the most intelligent people I've ever met. The work he has done over the years, without a doubt has been world class and he will be sorely missed," says Darren.
The Breakfast team chatted to Devi Sankaree Govender, a famous investigative television journalist from South Africa, about the life of her former colleague and 'O.G', Derek Watts.

In SA, you definitely can't mention Derek Watts without acknowledging his groundbreaking impact on journalism.
His investigative reports were a shining example of his commitment to uncovering the truth, often putting himself in the line of fire to expose corruption, injustice, and societal issues.

Carmen Reddy has echoed the sentiments of many South Africans mourning the loss of our great journalist.
"I remember studying at university and watching 'Carte Blanche' every Sunday was my highlight, as this man was the reason why I studied journalism. Gone but never forgotten in the hearts of SA," says Carmen.
From the East Coast Breakfast team, we would like to send out special prayers to the friends and family connected with Derek Watts.
