Gorilla shot dead after "protecting" boy at zoo

Are the parents at fault for the tragic death of this gorilla who saved the little boy's life?

Gorilla Attack little boy

Cincinnati Zoo has lost a member of it's wildlife family after Harambe the Gorilla was shot after a child fell into his cage.

The 4-year-old boy crawled under a rail and through wires, before falling 3.5 meters into a gorilla cage at the zoo.

The 17-year-old, 400 pound, male gorilla grabbed the child and dragged him through a moat.

Harambe then proceeded to drag the little boy for 10 minutes before the zoo's dangerous animal rescue team shot and killed the gorilla while the little boy was in-between the gorilla's legs.

Zoo Director Thane Maynard said the gorilla didn't appear to be attacking the child but was "an extremely strong" animal in an agitated situation.

He said tranquilising the gorilla wouldn't have knocked him out immediately, leaving the boy in danger.

"They made a tough choice and they made the right choice because they saved that little boy's life," Maynard said.
