Freak waves at Durban's North Beach caught on camera

The unusually high tide on North Beach was captured by shocked witnesses who shared their images on social media.
Whilst it seemed like the usual relaxed Sunday for most, others who planned to enjoy their day at Durban's North Beach were stunned by the freak waves that emerged.

The extremely big waves that tragically swept away a seven-year-old girl are known as rogue waves. These types of waves are particularly dangerous as they are unexpected - you simply don't see them coming.

The waves washed over the North Beach Pier flooding most of the area.
