Five ways to be a powerful woman in the workplace
Updated | By Tamlyn Canham
While women can no doubt hold their own in the workplace,
they are still faced with many challenges.
Many women are still taken less seriously than their male counterparts, do not receive the same pay, and are sometimes labelled b*tchy when they are in leadership positions.
Despite these challenges, many women are making a name for themselves in previously male-dominated industries.
And if you want to be a leader in your field, but are not quite there yet, here are a few tips to help you leave your mark.
Be confident
Nothing will eat you up in the business world faster than self-doubt. While many women are naturally confident, some are a lot more reserved. In order to get noticed you have to speak up, and show your colleagues, and boss, that you are a force to reckon with. One of the best ways to become more confident in the workplace is to always be prepared. Know your job inside and out! Keep learning, and improving your skills, so when the spotlight does shine on you, you will be much more confident to talk about what you know.
Own your strengths
Everyone has strengths. List all your strengths and figure out how you can use them in the workplace to highlight your talents. And while it is great to work on your weaknesses, your strengths will carry you through those tough workplace situations.
Get Inspired
Looking up to inspirational women can be a serious motivator. Figure out how they got to top, study their careers, read up on their tips for success. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, or even request for one of them to be your mentor. Many will say no as they just don’t have the time, but you never know who could say yes. Networking is also important, so make sure you attend women’s conferences, talks, and events, to meet new people. You can also make a list of all the women who inspire you, and then follow then on social media. Engage with them when they post content pertaining to your career. Sometimes, even a hello is all you need to get started.
Be a PRO at what you do
One of East Coast Radio’s workplace values is to be a pro at what you do. If you want to get noticed, you need to be the best at what you do. It doesn't matter whether you are a receptionist, a cleaner or a manager, give 110% in everything you do, and all your hard work will eventually pay off. It is really hard not to notice hardworking individuals. Take it one step further and make sure you get as much education and training in your field, and stay abreast of changes or trends in your industry.
Plan your career
If you want a successful career, you need to know where you are going, and how you are going to get there. It is no use saying you want to be a manager, or be as successful as a woman you admire if you don’t have a plan on how to get there. Think about all the skills you need, the goals you need to achieve, and plan how you will get from A to B. Take steps every day, week, and month that will help you get where you need to be!
