Statistics SA reported that the official unemployment rate declined further to 33.9% in the second quarter of 2022, from 34.5% in the first. Unemployment hit a record high of 35.3% in the fourth quarter of 2021.

The Hungarian government fired the head of the national weather service and her deputy, two days after a fireworks display to celebrate a national holiday was delayed for fear of storms. The fireworks display along the banks of the Danube was billed as “the biggest in Europe” to celebrate “Hungary’s millennial state”. Skies turned out to be clear.

It has begun! Athletes from 70 countries are streaming into KwaZulu-Natal where they will line up in Pietermaritzburg at the crack of dawn on Sunday for the start of the 95th Comrades Marathon. They will have 12 hours – from 5.30 am to 5.30 pm – to complete the 89.885km down-run to Durban.

The 'Bachelor South Africa' reality star Lee Thompson is reportedly back in rehab. On Friday, Huisgenoot and YOU magazine published an expose with shocking photos reporting that the troubled former Sharks player and fitness model has been living on the streets of Cape Town. It comes after he had been evicted from a guest house he stayed at in Buitenkant Street, which he trashed and tried to break into earlier this month.

The SA National Taxi Council (Santaco) has snubbed the national protest, saying its members will continue with their normal operations. They are distancing themselves from it, saying that they are not necessarily in disagreement with the reasons behind the strike, but that its national executive committee did not see it necessary for them to participate in the action at this time.
