Missing dog cases in Durban are at an alarming rise
Updated | By East Coast Radio
Microchips are suggested for dog owners as it makes locating the owners of lost dogs easier.
In an interview with one of Durban's local newspapers, Durban and Coast SPCA shared the alarming rate at which missing dog cases are climbing. From the previous month of May's statistics only 15% percent of the missing dogs have been found.
Recently, we have all witnessed the numbers of posts on social media reporting on missing dogs. The best place to find these is the Facebook group Lost and Found pets (Durban and Highway). It is quite frustrating as without a collar or a microchip finding one's dog becomes harder. It's even harder to find the owners once the dog itself has been found by other parties.

The Durban and Coast SPCA confirmed a rise in figures of missing dogs. "Only six of these dogs have been found," according to the local newspaper.
Tanya Fleischer marketing manager of Durban and Coast SPCA, shared that only halfway through the month of June, they have received 35 reports.
This is put up against a total of 40 missing dog reports for the whole of May.
It is sad to know the number of abandoned pets in a month. Tanya shares that it towers 1 000 pets per month.

The advice that Fleischer gives the community as a whole is that should one find a stray animal, the first thing to do is make a call to the nearest SPCA for collection. She continues that this first and only step is critical as one is not aware of what disease the animal may have and you simply do not know the nature of the animal - an animal expert is therefore inclined for such situations.
We also contacted her for more information regarding the steps taken for microchipping of pets.

In closing, it was advised that animals are scanned for microchips as it simplifies the process of reuniting owners with their lost pets.
"Microchipping is a painless procedure and is cost effective, around R150 to R200 per pet," according to Northglen news
Should your pet go missing contact all the vets in your area to report your missing pet, do not just call the vet that is nearest to you because people will generally take the animal to their own vet. You can also contact the SPCA on 031 579 6500.
