A review of comedy in Durban 2023 by Darren Maule
Updated | By East Coast Radio
The year of Durban comedy in review by Darren Maule.
The Durban comedy scene has rocked this year! And who better to chat about the last year of laughter in Durban, than East Coast Radio’s King of Comedy - our very own SAFTA award winning actor, comedian and breakfast radio host Darren Maule.
“2023 has seen some great comedy in Durban” says Darren, who himself is a resident MC for a regular comedy night in Umhlanga.
“We are seeing wonderful growth at club level with young up-coming talent. There are frequent gigs in Durban at small venues, for example there are some great spots on Florida Road and my own club nights always include an open mic ten minute spot, specifically for emerging talent. It’s so important that young talent is nurtured and given the opportunity for stage time.
We are also seeing international acts visiting Durban and that is fantastic for us as a city. The ICC, the Globe at Suncoast for example are such superb venues and it’s awesome that international acts are booking here. Darren himself has hosted two gigs at the Globe this year and been in the line-up for a number of other comedy nights there.

When asked about his best funny moments of the year Darren says there’s been a few “I laughed so much at Mpho Popps set this year, I watched him on the backstage monitor at the ‘Darren Maule and Friends’ mid-year and laughed so hard, he was superb.
I am really enjoying the rise and rise of Bash with Tash, she’s such a good laugh. She has been on the breakfast show twice this year, was on my line-up at Suncoast and I’ll be performing at a gig with her here in Greyville on Friday 15/122023. I always love gigs with Mark Lottering - we got to get some backstage hugs on a few occasions this year including the Hilton Arts Festival.”
As a top MC in Durban, Darren Maule also gets to see some hilarious family moments.
Some of the funniest moments have definitely been at family events this year whether it’s MC at a birthday or wedding, I’ve laughed a lot this year with Durban families. The need for laughter is greater than ever and I’m so happy to see people putting laughter at the top of their list when planning a night out- Darren Maule
