Darren defends Madonna's tribute to Prince
Updated | By Darren Maule
Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to get through this controversy called the Billboard Awards Prince tribute.
I'm sorry, but I can not think of any one artist more fitting and more relevant to give a tribute to the the now late and always great artist Prince.
Madonna and Prince's journey through the ages and through the industry were a mirror image of each other. They both endured and reinvented themselves and the industry around them. They both broke down preconceived ideas of sexuality, spirituality and gender identity.
Prince and Madonna were friends right from the start and even, although it might have been a publicity stunt, dated each other briefly in the mid 80's.
There have been voices that have tried to claim Prince as their own and have fought vehemently against Madonna's tribute to Prince.
How soon we forget that at one time Prince was the pariah of his own community. Early in his career he was too short or too pale or too effeminate or two alternative to be yours. Now that he is gone you have the nerve to dictate who should be the one to pay tribute to him.
All I can say is; "His name was Prince, and he was funky. Her name's Madonna, and she is worthy."
Here's the touching tribute here:
