In the heart of Johannesburg, the vibrant Bree Street has always been a bustling hub of activity, filled with shops, offices, and eateries that attract both locals and tourists alike.
However, on Wednesday, 19 July, chaos erupted in the Joburg CBD, turning the City of Gold into a scene of devastation and fear.

A massive gas explosion shook the very foundations of Bree Street, leaving behind a trail of destruction that would be etched in the memories of its inhabitants for years to come.
According to news reports, the public has been urged to stay away from Bree Street following an underground gas explosion.

New Breakfast co-host Carmen Reddy, fresh from Johannesburg, was shocked to hear the story and see the images that are flooding social media.
"I remember that street very well because a couple of weeks ago, I was having meetings and lunch dates at the restaurants there. To find out that now it's in such a bad way, it's very sad," says Carmen.

According to news reports, the incident occurred when scores of people were navigating the streets to grab a quick bite to eat or attend to their daily tasks.
Suddenly, a thunderous explosion ripped through the air, followed by plumes of thick, black smoke billowing into the sky.
Panic and confusion spread like wildfire as people scrambled to seek safety amidst the chaos.
ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring says initial reports indicate that several people sustained minor to moderate injuries, but no fatalities had been reported.
Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) spokesperson Bertha Peters-Scheepers says the affected areas were closed off to allow emergency and other critical services to do their job.

According to Johannesburg Metro Police Department, the explosion occurred between Bree and Simmonds streets in the city centre.
