Affirmative Action started in the US in 1961, when President John F. Kennedy signed Executive Order number 10925 on the 6th of March. SA followed suit decades later. In the UK, the Parker Review Committee has made recommendations on ethnic diversity on UK Boards.
To track diversity and inclusivity indicators, it is now mandatory in the UK for companies with 250 or more employees to publish gender pay gap stats annually. UK companies are also setting themselves stretching BAME targets.
BEE in SA followed Malaysia’s 1969 New Economic Policy; then indigenisation in the UAE, and local content in many African countries. The global workforce needs to adapt to these policies, for their peace of mind and sanity.
