Bafana Bafana at AFCON: “Not luck, but hard work"
Updated | By East Coast Radio
A game that will go down in history!
Loud cheers filled South African lounges in the early hours of Sunday morning as Bafana Bafana clinched a semi-final berth at the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations.
The last eight clash against Cape Verde was anything but straightforward for Hugo Broos’ men. After the full ninety minutes of play elapsed, the scores were level at 0-0.
The full quota of added time was not enough to break the deadlock, thus leading to a penalty shootout.
The pressure of the occasion would produce one of the great displays of football heroism when the Bafana Bafana goalkeeper made history.

Ronwen Williams saved four penalties for the first time in AFCON history, creating a masterclass that had to be seen to be believed.
As the continent looked on with bated breath, cool heads prevailed and Bafana Bafana secured a 2-1 win on penalties.
Now, South Africa’s football team prepare to meet Nigeria’s Super Eagles in the semi-final clash on Wednesday, 7 February 2024.
We couldn’t be prouder of our boys and eagerly anticipate a heroic showing in the next game, with memories of 1996 in the back of our mind.

When we got to the penalty shootout, it was a special thing for the players, because during training they were scoring them. When we have a goalkeeper who stops 4 penalty kicks, this is not luck but a lot of hard work.- Hugo Broos
