Alleged Thanda Royal Zulu sale an insult to football
Updated | By Benedict Ngwenya
Rumour has it that AmaZulu are looking to acquire Thanda Royal Zulu's PSL status and that is unfair to the whole football fratenity.
Hear what Darren Maule, Sky Tshabalala and Eggs Benedict Ngwenya had to say on the sale below, then read more under the podcast.
The Richards Bay-based outfit has gained Premier Soccer League promotion and its Chairman, Mr Pierre Delvaux has expressed his desire to sell it if he doesn't secure a sponsorship deal.
I understand it's difficult to keep the club afloat but he must think about the fans who have always supported the club through thick and thin. I've been to their homeground, Umhalthuze Sports Complex a couple of times and the fans have always filled it to the rafters.
The City of Umhlathuze has also issued a statement condemning the sale. The municipality has a point because it has always worked hand in hand with the team to help it survive though difficult times.
The alleged sale is in the region of R55-million, which begs the question why does AmaZulu not spend that money on quality players to keep the team in the country's premier division.
This is not the first time AmaZulu have been involved in such a situation. A few season's back they bought Dynamos FC out of the PSL and last season they tried to buy Mpumalanga Black Aces but the PSL rejected the sale.
I hope this sale too doesn't succeed so that AmaZulu can learn to win on the pitch, not in the boardroom. If the PSL approves this sale, then relegation dogfight becomes pointless.
Let it be about football, not money. Football is the beautiful game and that's what we want to enjoy.
