Iceland is on high alert for a volcanic eruption.
A series of powerful earthquakes have hit the country’s southwestern Retkjanes peninsula. The intense seismic activity has ultimately led to Icelandic authorities declaring a state of emergency.
While residents flee the Grinvadik area, specialists report that there is a possibility that the volcano could destroy the whole town.

"Earthquakes can become larger than those that have occurred and this series of events could lead to an eruption," the administration warned.
Independent UK reports: 'The residents endured a less shaky night as 880 earthquakes below magnitude three were recorded overnight compared to the previous 1,485 earthquakes which rocked the country within 48 hours.'
Thousands of tremors have been recorded in Iceland since the end of October. Iceland has 33 active volcanic systems, the highest number in Europe.
As the world received news of the unfortunate incidents that transpired in this country, we can’t help but hope that the warning mitigates fatalities.
