Woman shares how she used R30 buy ingredients for a meal

In these uncertain times, there's always a way to make your money work for you. It might just take some frugality and shopping around.

We recently discovered a young content creator who shares content on finding things to eat for under R30.

While many were impressed by his ability to stretch R30, the food options weren’t exactly the healthiest.

This time, we came across a woman who took on the challenge of cooking a full meal with just R30.

TikTok creator Olive Foodie headed to her local Shoprite to find ingredients that would stretch her money while still including the essentials – vegetables, carbs, and protein.

She bought a chicken breast for R10.50, a mixed pack of vegetables for R9.99, and a packet of noodles for R7.99, bringing the total to R28.48.

While she did use a few pantry staples for seasoning and electricity to cook the meal, the core ingredients still came in under R30.

Factoring in the additional costs, she managed to prepare a nutritious meal for two for under R30, proving that affordable, balanced eating is possible with a little creativity.

Here are some of the comments on her video:

  • "You need to have a show titled 'Surviving the economy', impressive."

  • "That's one meal for me. It's a brilliant video, though."

  • "This, as a university student, is so helpful, thank you so much."

  • "We need to give this aunty our salaries so she can do the grocery shopping for us."

  • "Can you find me a R30 Car?"

  • "I was a single Mom for a while, and meals like this kept us FED."
