Talking about the rising cost of living feels like listening to a broken record, but it’s an undeniable reality – one that often hits harder than just your wallet.

Budgeting can only do so much, as the harsh truth remains: you need to earn more than you spend, and for most people, that’s not the case. But a recent video circulating on social media offers a different perspective.

A shopper at a popular South African store captured a surprising moment while waiting in line. Standing close enough to see the checkout total of the customer ahead, they were stunned to witness a staggering bill of R27,130.

One person described the fact that this woman tapped for a total of R27,130.21 as "diabolical".

While another wrote, "She even tapped. Mina, with R11 in my account, I deactivated the tapping feature. Can't stand someone picking up my card and tapping."

  • "I am more vexed by the fact that the trolley is not even full."

  • "I cry over R2000 … 27k ???"

  • "A couple of years ago when I was doing IVF my total was R21000 for my meds."

  • "Must be appliances and designer perfumes. I know they stock very expensive coffee machines and higher end perfumes n colognes, could be those things combined."
