Have you ever lost your car keys, or, worse, had your key break inside the ignition?

There's never a good time for a car mishap, especially when you’re stuck with the unexpected cost of repairs or replacements and don’t have the money to cover it.

Sometimes, it’s unavoidable, and you have no choice but to find the funds to fix the problem. Other times, you tap into your inner MacGyver and make do with what you’ve got.

We came across a video of a man who did just that – he harnessed his inner MacGyver and used his resourcefulness to start his car without the key.

For those who may not know, the "MacGyver gene" is an unofficial term that refers to the ingenuity and resilience of South Africans. It's inspired by the 1985 TV series 'MacGyver', where the hero used his wide-ranging knowledge to solve complex problems in the most creative ways.

In the video, which has gained over 1.8 million views, we watch a man use a bottle opener to start his car. It seems his car key broke off inside the ignition, but fortunately, a portion of the key was still sticking out of the keyhole.

The man resourcefully uses the bottle opener and is successful in starting his car. This is just one example of how South Africans can think outside the box when faced with a tricky situation.

Losing your car keys or dealing with a broken ignition key can quickly become an expensive mistake.

According to Bidvest Insurance, "Most car owners have no idea how much their keys are worth until they lose one. The average price of a single replacement key can start from R2,000. The cost of keys for a luxury car can be up to R10,000, and exotic car keys usually cost even more."
