Video: Tourist throws plastic bag into hippo's mouth
Updated | By East Coast Radio
This video makes us question our so-called 'humanity'...
Our wildlife is unique to us, and we want to preserve it as much as possible, but, sadly, not everyone feels this way.
Some people behave ignorantly towards wildlife, in addition to poachers. The pollution affecting marine life is an excellent example of this ignorance. Besides ignorance, there are the massive effects of things like plastic.
According to the Two Oceans Aquarium, "Plastic pollution causes great harm to the organisms big and small that encounter it. From tiny corals to majestic whales, more than 700 marine species are known to be killed either by the ingestion of plastic or entanglement - resulting in millions of animal deaths a year, that we know of."
Plastic also affects wildlife: "Wildlife can get caught in discarded plastics and often die if they cannot escape. Animals can mistake plastics for food, often resulting in injury or death." (Royal Society of New Zealand)
A video that has offended many people shows tourists throwing a plastic bag into the mouth of a hippopotamus. The hippo was standing inside a pool of water at the Taman Safari Park in Indonesia when a group of tourists drove past in their vehicle.
One of the tourists tried feeding a carrot to the hippo, but then another person from the vehicle threw an empty plastic bag into the mouth of the hippo. Worse, the Hippo assumed it was food and began chewing it.
