VIDEO: Man rides horse in Newlands

Is this a sign that it’s time to prep your bets for the Hollywoodbets Durban July 2025?

While today’s generation might not be familiar with the sight of a knight in shining armour galloping in to rescue a damsel in distress, the concept is still widely recognised.

Originating in the late Middle Ages, this image of a heroic, chivalrous man on horseback has long been romanticised in literature and film.

But in South Africa, especially in Durban, a man on a horse paints a very different picture.

Here, it’s less about medieval fairy tales and more about high fashion, fancy hats, and betting slips.

Because when we see a man riding a horse, we don't think knight in shining armour but rather Hollywoodbets Durban July.

Need proof that Durbanites instantly link horses to one of the city’s most iconic events? Just look at social media.

Local comedian Cyril Basker recently shared a video from his neighbourhood in Newlands East, capturing a scene that had him – and many others – laughing out loud.

While strolling through New Dawn Park, he spotted a man casually riding a horse through the suburb.

What came next was the most natural response to seeing a man ride a horse in the suburbs, calling it a sign to get your bets ready for the Hollywoodbets Durban July.

Watch the hilarious moment unfold in the TikTok video below.

Social media users from the Newlands East were quick to engage with the video and share their thoughts:

  • "He’s manifesting a Porsche, you all just don’t see the vision."

  • "Petrol is expensive, invest in a horse."

  • "He's ready for Durban July this one."

  • "When I say to the people we don't live on a farm, this happens."

  • "With the price of fuel, potholes, traffic, hijacking and cost of running cars… we should all be operating horsepower."
