Tips on how to succeed in male-dominated careers
Updated | By Udesha Moodley-Judhoo
We are in the year 2025, and we still hear stories of women struggling to find equality and respect in traditionally male-dominated industries.

An ongoing workplace discussion that can sometimes be overlooked or undermined is how women are treated in traditionally male-dominated industries.
Some women are prone to accepting the gender biases that are still prevalent in some male-dominated industries because they don't want to appear weak or 'sensitive'. But perhaps that is where the problem lies.
Accepting a toxic work environment does not address the problems, so no growth or change exists.
The female factor website said, "Studies show that women will only consider a position if they meet 100% of the requirements, while men are ready to try if they only fulfil 60% of what is asked. To prevent excluding female candidates from joining a company or raising their interest in a promotion, HR managers and leaders must be aware of these gender differences."
In addition, training for employees on the issues women face in the workplace, including gender equality. These can assist companies in ensuring that women are not overlooked for promotions and overall growth in predominantly male workplaces.
Here are some helpful tips on how to succeed in male-dominated professions:
1. Speak confidently: Never discount how clear, concise, authoritative and confident communication can assist you in the workplace. Believing in yourself and your opinion is the first step in communicating confidently.
2. Let go of people-pleasing: If you want to succeed in any industry, especially one dominated by males, stop people-pleasing. Remember, there's a difference between people-pleasing and being a team player. You can still be a team player and have your views on how things are done.
3. Remember your worth and your knowledge: Do what you need to do to enhance yourself, read, study, and grow yourself so that you distinguish yourself from the rest and stay ahead in your industry.
4. Conflict management: Learn how to manage conflict healthily and productively. Stay professional even if you are being undermined or taunted. Don't let anger lead you; take control and manage things with professionalism at the heart of everything.
5. Don't let fear drive you: Never let fear drive your motives for growing or asking for a promotion. If you believe you deserve something, ask for it with authority and conviction.
6. Look into getting a mentor: Find a mentor who can help guide you in the field and support your growth. Look at someone who holds you in high esteem.
7. Set the stage for other women: Match with employers who support female growth in the workplace. Set up groups or networks that help women in the same field, helping others deal with things that you might've gone through can change the industry.
