Restaurant in Thailand gives you a discount if you're skinny

It might be just for fun, but it is a bit discriminatory...

Nowadays, everyone looks for ways to get discounts.

While asking for a discount is perfectly normal in many cultures, it’s not always met with enthusiasm.

With prices rising everywhere, it’s no surprise that more people are turning to rewards programmes and apps in search of a better deal.

One digital creator, currently documenting her travels in Thailand, recently shared an interesting (albeit questionable) discount system at a restaurant she visited.

At the entrance stands a gate with bars of varying widths, each labelled with a discount.

The tighter the squeeze, the bigger the discount.

While it may have been intended as a quirky tourist attraction, not everyone saw the humour. One commenter wrote, "I think it's ridiculous and not funny at all. It's body shaming."

Another viewer claimed it was all just a gimmick and that no actual discounts were given.

Watch the digital creator make it through the 15% discount bars twice.

Please note that this video may be offensive to some viewers.

Although some treated it as a light-hearted challenge, others pointed out how the setup felt exclusionary and insensitive.

Check out some of the comments below:

  • "What a disgusting discrimination. So any person in a wheelchair, any body builder, any woman with a womanly figure, any elderly who can’t walk straight are not worth a discount? I guess the owners discrimination of overweight people failed big time!

  • "If you need a discount in Thailand for food. You’re eating at the wrong place."

  • "The restaurant is called Chiang Mai Breakfast World, and the whole thing is a joke. You don't get discounts for fitting through. It's just a fun thing to try. But watching people get so triggered is entertaining."

  • "Amusement park rides have size/weight limits. I don't see why a restaurant can't give a discount based on size/weight."
