The cost of living has escalated over the last few months - and no one is happy about it.

According to Numbeo.com, "A single person's estimated monthly costs are R10,830.40 without rent, compared to a family of four's R37,680.80."

The uneasiness of inflation can stress many South Africans earning minimum wage. "The Department of Employment and Labour announced earlier this year that the minimum wage of R25.42 per hour increased to R27,58 per hour with effect 1 March 2024." (CCMA)

That doesn't account for workers who are employed in extended public works programmes; they earn a minimum of R15,16 per hour.

A slideshow video shared with TikTok shocked South Africans as it showed the price of toothpaste.

Before we delve into this, it is vital to acknowledge that the toothpaste in question is specialised and designed for people who want to remove stains from their teeth.

Although we cannot attest to the effectiveness of this toothpaste, we can agree that it costs more than regular toothpaste, so we can understand the shock and horror that came with seeing the price, which was R115.

It was interesting to note the way South Africans responded to the post. Many concluded that Cape Town was an expensive city to live in, but we beg to differ.

  • "SPAR in Stellenbosch (Neelsie) normal Pringles are R83"
  • "What gets me is Dove. When did we get to R90.00 for 4 bars"
  • "Bold of you to assume it's Cape Town only"
  • "I bought a flake chocolate for R17 yesterday"
  • "You know prices for groceries are the same over the country??"
