Is it wrong to share your salary information with co-workers?
Updated | By East Coast Radio
We're not sure about other countries, but in South Africa, sharing your salary with others is frowned upon.
Notoriously, sharing your salary information with your co-workers has been something your company frowns upon. Sometimes, it is part of policy not to share this confidential information with anyone.
For the most obvious reasons, most companies will not want you to share this confidential information about your salary because it could cause a riot among workers.
Most especially if you are in the same job position as another person and they are earning more than you. You can understand how that might look to the employee earning less.
A person posted to Reddit to ask if sharing one's salary information is wrong. The public question was because the person's wife was from Europe and shared that it was less taboo to share your salary in that part of the world.

It was interesting to read people's views on the topic. Some blatantly said that they didn't believe it was wrong, but the companies didn't want them to disclose their salaries because many practice inequality in their salary structures.
According to the South African Labour Guide, "Employees are often contractually prohibited from disclosing the details of their remuneration to any person, including colleagues. A clause to this effect is often found in employment contracts. Sometimes, employers flag such a disclosure as a disciplinary offence."
