International Day of Friendship - A day to spread kindness
Have you ever had a friendship that ended too soon? Perhaps the spirit of today will help you rekindle that friendship or allow you to move on and create another.
Today is International Day of Friendship. This day was "proclaimed in 2011 by the UN General Assembly with the idea that friendship between peoples, countries, cultures and individuals can inspire peace efforts and build bridges between communities". (UN)
We can understand the sentiment behind this special day; it encourages us to approach every relationship from a place of friendship. When you think about it, the basis of every more extensive relationship (between countries and nations) starts with people.
So, if we can master the elements of a good friendship on the basic level, then surely we can do better on the larger scale...
We know why this day was created, but in saying that, we wanted to delve into friendships that have ended. A story on social media about a friendship shared between two people for roughly two years ended harshly.
The person who posted the story said that they would see each other at least once a week and even tried dating but realised they were better as friends. He believes their friendship ended because of COVID.
They were friends during COVID-19, but he knew she was a "hermit" and wasn't too concerned about getting sick. However, one time, when she was ill, he decided not to see her, and she brutally ended their friendship.
After she invited him over to watch a movie, he declined, explaining that he didn't want to get sick as he was still recovering from his hip surgery. He would be seeing a friend's baby the same week and didn't want to put the baby in harm's way.
To end a friendship based on such harsh circumstances, especially considering so many people lost their lives during the pandemic, is just silly in our opinion. Perhaps he was better off without this friendship? However, we also understand that the pandemic affected people's thinking abilities.
