Have you ever left a restaurant without paying?

Popular Durban eatery owner Craig from Uncle Craig's Kitchen shared
how two customers didn't pay for their orders, and it made us wonder –
is this something people do intentionally, or is it an honest mistake?

Finding out a customer has skipped the bill is never a pleasant experience. Also known as a "dine and dash", it’s the kind of situation no restaurant or eatery owner ever wants to face.
A recent video posted by Uncle Craig's Kitchen, an up-and-coming eatery in Malvern, left us with a sour taste – not because of the food, but because of what owner Craig revealed.
In the video, he shares how two customers walked out without paying for their meal.
In South Africa, we take pride in our food and beverage entrepreneurs – their creativity, hustle, and resilience. But behind the scenes of every small business lies a balancing act of finances, trust, customer service, and community relationships.

While it was disheartening to hear what happened to him and his team, many on social media praised Craig for the respectful and composed way he handled the situation.

Craig shared a follow-up video yesterday, saying that one of the two customers had returned to settle their bill. He expressed his gratitude for their honesty, acknowledging that sometimes, these situations can genuinely be unintentional.
Unfortunately, the second customer has yet to come forward or make contact. Craig explained that while he’s hesitant to do so, he may be left with no choice but to post the security footage and name the individual if they don’t come forward soon.
"Dining and dashing" might seem harmless to some – perhaps even justifiable with the thought, “It’s just one meal, they won’t even notice.”
But if every customer adopted that mindset, small businesses like Craig’s wouldn’t survive. All they’re trying to do is chase a dream and serve their community with good food and heart.
