In the event of an emergency, try to remain calm – panicking often only makes things worse.

Have you ever heard people say, "When driving, you don't just drive for yourself, you drive for everyone else on the road?"

While it’s often said from the perspective of a parent or caregiver, it works both ways. There are times when you need to drive with others in mind, anticipating how they might react in an emergency or accident. And then, there's your own experience handling one.

We stumbled upon a video of a driver who remained the picture of calm when he faced an uncanny accident on the freeway.

Bradley Kinnear was driving on what looks like the N3 when, out of nowhere, his bonnet flew up and slammed into the windscreen, blocking his view of the road.

Remaining remarkably calm, Kinnear improvised by using the bonnet vents as a peephole to continue driving safely.

While the video doesn’t detail how he managed to get himself and his passengers to safety, it did confirm that they all made it through unharmed.

If you ever experience this kind of situation while driving, you can follow these tips:

  • Stay calm and focused on the situation, keeping your hands firmly on the steering wheel to maintain control.

  • Put your hazards on to alert other drivers that you're experiencing an emergency.

  • Use the gap beneath the bonnet, peer through the vent, or look outside the window to try and get visibility of the road ahead.

  • Slow down by easing off the accelerator and gradually applying the brakes.

  • Pull over to the side of the road and, if possible, move into the emergency lane.

  • Once you've come to a stop, assess the damage. If you’re able to, secure the bonnet safely; if not, call for assistance.
