Danny Guselli joins Podcasthon to shine a light on BabyLine

Podcasthon is a global initiative uniting over 1,600 podcasts and radio hosts from 47 countries to support charities. This year, South African voices are joining in through the South African Podcasters Guild.

Danny Guselli and his team are excited to announce their participation in this year’s Podcasthon.

The South African Podcasters Guild (SAPG) explains the collaboration began at The Podcast Show in London, where Paulo Dias from SAPG met Jérémie Mani, co-founder of Podcasthon.

"What began as a conversation about leveraging podcasting for social good has now grown into a large-scale movement spanning 47 countries and over 1,600 participating podcasts. More than 60% of this year's participants are from English-speaking nations, including South Africa, the UK, the US, Canada, and Australia."

Danny Guselli has selected a charity that's really close to his heart and making a real impact in the community – BabyLine.

Tatum and Joanne Teunissen from BabyLine joined Danny in studio to chat more about the work that BabyLine and The Baby Home do in KZN.

Tatum recently took over BabyLine, a counselling and support service for pregnant women and mothers in crisis. Through a dedicated helpline (082 069 9067), women can call or WhatsApp a social worker for guidance and support.

"We aim to be a source of support for these mothers who are struggling and to guide them through their pregnancy, connecting them with the necessary services before they reach the point of abandoning their babies," says Tatum.

Looking ahead to 2025, BabyLine has plans to visit a local government hospital each month, delivering care packs to maternity and labour wards. "These packs act as a starter pack to help get the moms on their feet for their first few weeks of motherhood," Tatum shares.

"Sometimes, all these moms need is a pack of nappies, which can be the deciding factor between keeping her child or abandoning her child."

In February, Tatum and Joanne visited the maternity ward at Addington Hospital, providing care packs to 50 mothers. Tatum described how heartwarming it was to witness the gratitude and appreciation from the moms who received them.

This month, they’ll be heading to King Edward Hospital, where they plan to distribute 80 packs.

"Everything that goes into the care packs is from the community. We rely on the goodness of the community to donate and contribute towards the packs. We also give the nurses a small token of appreciation to thank them for all they do," Tatum says.

Throughout the year, the team will visit Addington, King Edward, and Mahatma Gandhi Hospitals on a rotating basis – locations where baby abandonment is most common.

"Through our work at The Baby Home, we’ve spent a lot of time in these hospitals, collecting babies who have been left behind," Tatum shares.
