Have you ever wondered why, in many other countries, motorists must put petrol in their own cars?

It all comes down to trust. A recent video circulating on social media highlights exactly why.

In the footage, a motorist waits as a petrol attendant fills up his car at what appears to be a quiet, almost deserted fuel station – perhaps making it easier for him to pull off his plan.

Just as the attendant places the pump back, his reaction says it all – the driver is about to pull off a classic fuel-and-run.

The motorist brazenly commits petrol theft, speeding off without a second thought about who will cover the cost of his crime.

Back in 2018, when petrol was a relatively affordable R13.96 per litre, petrol drive-offs were already on the rise. If it was an issue then, what does that say about the situation now?

Some petrol stations even introduced new policies, requiring customers to pay before fuelling up.

It was interesting to see the petrol attendant react instinctively, but what if someone had seriously been hurt in his attempt to stop the driver?

Perhaps a more effective approach would be to implement a pay-before-you-pump policy at all petrol stations, reducing the risk and preventing these incidents altogether.
