Breakdancing introduced for the Paris 2024 Olympics
Updated | By East Coast Radio
We are ready to see dancers break it down with their electrifying moves.
Dance has always been an art form that has yet to make it to the level of ranking as a sport. As you can see from the above news report, breakdancing has evolved in its own right.
But not anymore. Breaking, commonly known to many as Breakdancing, has joined other established 'urban sports' in the Olympics 2024. Breaking, along with Sports climbing, Skateboarding, and Surfing, have all been recognised at the Olympics this year, which is exciting news for B-Boys and B-Girls.
Sky News announced that breakdancers would be judged on five categories: Musicality, Vocabulary, Originality, Technique, and Execution.
Although breakdancing is a new sport for the Olympics, it is certainly familiar to the general breakdancing community.
"Breaking, short for breakdancing, was added to the Paris 2024 Olympic roster after enjoying wide success at the Summer Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires in 2018." (IOL)
We look forward to seeing Courtnaé Paul, Durban B-Girl, spin her way to Gold at the Paris Olympics. How exciting to see someone from our hometown choreographing at an Olympic level!
"Paul said she got into breakdancing almost by chance, having previously practised gymnastics, kickboxing, Muay Thai and other sports. After moving to Johannesburg and dreaming of a professional dancing career, she started working as a choreographer, backup dancer, DJ, and media entrepreneur." (IOL)
Paul is described by her trainer, Jaco Claasen, as an "explosive and powerful lady". Although she would love to be six years younger, she is in her prime. She even has a unique dance style, which she described as a "mixture of her self-starter roughness, education, and South African flavour".
We love how Ice T described it - courtesy of Instagram:
"The Breakdancing event at the 2024 Olympics could possibly be one of the HipHop culture's proudest moments... Because Breaking is absolutely nothing but HipHop."
