Why you should be mindful when encountering a learner driver

A driver who filmed herself stalling on a hill also captured a tense moment of road rage between herself and another driver.

The truth is, none of us are born experts at anything.

So, why do we let anger and frustration get the better of us when we encounter someone who's still working on their driving skills or isn't quite there in terms of confidence and proficiency, for instance?

There will always be drivers on the road who don't follow the rules, regardless of their experience level. But that doesn't mean we should let it rattle us and lose our cool.

The recent alleged road rage shooting on the Higginson Highway has left many people stunned at the extent that some might go to when faced with anger behind the wheel.

A video shared on social media shows a young woman behind the wheel, navigating a steep hill. She filmed herself tackling a spot that had repeatedly tripped her up – where she would unintentionally stall her car.

For many, filming themselves overcoming a challenge can be a liberating experience. For this young woman, it was a steep hill that had become her Achilles' heel.

On this particular day, as she took a deep breath and tried to master her clutch control, a man overtook her and began shouting, which understandably upset her.

In the heat of the moment, she retaliated and posted the video, sharing how people on the road can "test" you.

@lepulana_s 😭😭😭😂People will test you hey, that time im holding my breath so the car doesn’t switch off!!! #learners #manualcar #driving #learnerdriver #steephill ♬ original sound - Lepulana_S

We can all agree – drivers often test your patience more than the driving test itself. This highlights the importance of staying calm, cool, and collected when you're getting used to the road.

But being patient and considerate with a learner driver doesn't make you soft – it makes you human.

You might not remember it, but you were once a learner too. So, next time you encounter a learner driver on the road, take a moment to reflect on it.
