A story that made headlines back in 2016 popped up on my timeline again while I was preparing for my show. I have never seen it before, and it got me thinking.
According to Daily Mail, a former soldier stripped himself naked and threw himself into a lion pit at the Santiago Zoo in Chile, all in front of horrified onlookers. He claimed that he was a prophet and was sent by God.
At this stage, it's unclear if he was trying to end his life, but it's believed that the tragic incident may have been related to the death of his mother from breast cancer almost 10 years earlier.
The zoo considered legal action against the man, who recovered in the hospital with wounds to his face, skull, neck, shoulders, and groin. After the man jumped into the lions' enclosure, they started to play with him, thinking it was all a game, but soon after they attacked him, zoo security stepped in and threw water on the lions and later fired shots, killing two of the lions.Read: Zoo keeper attacked by tiger in Australia
So, the man trespassed into an area where the public is not normally allowed, so in essence, what he did was wrong, but can you imagine being the person that has to decide between saving the man or the lions? Or is that not even a question?
I am not saying this guy should have lost his life, I’d never wish that upon anyone. However, in this situation, these lions were completely innocent and this guy clearly wanted to take his life.
Warning: This footage is not for sensitive viewers.
What sort of punishment should this guy receive or should punishing him not even be a question?
