Parents often obsess over what the first words will be out of their children's mouths. Mom wants it to be "mama", and dad wants it to be "dada".
From a young age, in most cultures, it's almost an unspoken tradition that kids refer to their parents as either "mom" or "dad". That used to be the case, but in today's modern society, parents are allowing their kids to refer to them by their real name.
While it may seem reasonable for the liberal-thinkers, for others, it's downright disrespectful to call your mom or dad by their first name.
This was the case for one KZN man who took to our WhatsApp line to send us a voice note, expressing how upset he was to hear his girlfriend call her mom by her name.

We spoke to him off air and he added that in the Zulu culture, it is inappropriate to do such things. Even though she is a modern girl, she should show respect, and call her "mom" or "mama". He says that she started calling her by her name after she turned 21.
"She told me that her mom doesn't see anything wrong with it, but as an adult, she should think for herself. How do you go from one extreme to another? It's not right," he added.
