Would you say making Gulgulas is an art form?
Updated | By East Coast Radio
This Indian dessert is similar to what many South Africans call Vetkoek or Magwinya.
Many Hindus are celebrating the Festival of Mariamman during this time of year. To understand the diverse nature of our roots, it is important to pay tribute to understanding the diverse culture of South African Indians.
"When the Indian population settled in Durban more than 100 years ago, they not only adapted but brought their own traditional and cultural practices, which are still primarily practised today. The annual Mariamman Festival is one such example. Appreciating cultural diversity in Durban means understanding it. In Durban, we are fortunate enough to learn about each other's cultures as we observe and partake in these traditions." (Facebook)
One of the essential foods made during the festival is Gulgulas. These are the sweeter, smaller versions of the famous South African street snack Magwinya or Vetkoek.
The recipe for Gulgulas or Goolgoolas is similar to a pancake batter but has a thicker consistency. It is deep fried in oil and usually served alongside a savoury snack called Veda at the traditional Porridge Prayer.
A foodie content creator from Durban, Uthika Naidu, shared how she makes Gulgulas and how making them round is an art form that takes practice.

@uthika_naidu It took me ages to perfect this! I love the little crispy tails formed from the dragged batter. IMO, it's the best part of the goolgoola. #goolgoolas #fyp #foryoupage #Indian #southafrica ♬ original sound - ⭑
Uthika openly shared that she doesn't like to make the Gulgulas completely round. She loves the crispy tails that form as she drops the dough into the hot oil.
It was interesting to note that she reminded us of an Indian favourite and allowed us to experience some nostalgia. However, she was greeted by a troll. Uthika politely shut her down in the comments, and it was wonderful to see how people supported her in shutting down the naysayer.
After Uthika said that she shared the video based on her preferences, the troll kept saying that was the incorrect way of making Gulgulas. The thing about tradition and culture in our diverse country is that everyone brings their twist to the way they prepare food.
As we celebrate the festival of Mariamman, let's forgive those who speak ill of others and follow in the spirit of this festival. That is to thank Mother Nature for all she has provided us.
