Makeshift wooden tollgate leaves social media users shook

Would you rather use a damaged roadway or pay a fee to use a dirt road that bypasses a farm?

You might not expect it, but some people are willing to pay just to cross a road without damaging their vehicles.

A video of a man navigating a makeshift wooden tollgate between Chrissiesmeer and Carolina in the Mpumalanga grasslands has left many people shocked.

At first glance, the sight of a DIY tollgate seems almost comical – but it’s no joke.

This tollgate is the real deal, charging motorists R20 to pass.

It gained attention after a metal bridge connecting Carolina and Chrissiesmeer collapsed late last year, leaving locals with limited alternatives.

According to Highvelder, "A farmer between Chrissiesmeer and Carolina came up with the brilliant idea to capitalise after the P177 road between the two towns was closed following the collapse of a corrugated metal culvert bridge on 28 December, which caused extensive damage to the road surface and necessitated its immediate closure to ensure public safety."

Although authorities have confirmed that repairs are underway, there is no clear timeline for their completion.

This leaves motorists with limited options. The official alternative route via Carolina/Breyten is far from ideal, riddled with potholes and significantly increasing travel time.

For now, it seems the farmer’s makeshift wooden tollgate is the only viable solution.
