We take pride in feeding our families well in South Africa, but that's only sometimes possible.
Buying a live chicken and preparing it as a meal for one's family is not uncommon, especially in KZN, which has many poultry farms in and around the city. Here, you would find people buying fresh chickens.
This is also a strong business for many people living in the settlements or rural areas.
Although the price has escalated recently, they are still considered a rich source of protein. It could be any of these reasons that we saw this woman carrying a chicken as a mother would a baby. Or it could just be that she needed her hands to carry other things, so she used this method of carrying the chicken.
