Wine lovers, this one is for you: The secrets behind drinking wine
Updated | By East Coast Radio
When it comes to drinking wine, there has always been that contention that a glass of red can be beneficial, but scientists look into this more...
Wine is traditionally known as an acquired taste, but then that goes for all types of alcohol. The fermentation process takes grapes and transforms them into a liquid that many enjoy at sundown. This liquid has been said to be riddled with many health benefits, but to what extent?
Everything in life is said to be about "Balance". It's all about finding your Yin and Yang, finding your equilibrium. As much as that sounds so amazing, it's easier said than done. When it comes to finding a balance with things that are good for you and not so good for you, is there a formula?
This brings us to the fact that your favourite "wine-down" drink could actually be good for you, but overdoing it could have an adverse effect. According to nutritionist Serena Poon, red wine contains plant-based polyphenols, such as resveratrol, quercetin, and epicatechins, which are all antioxidants that your body needs, Eat This reports.
Antioxidants help protect your cells from damaging free radicals, which can cause oxidative stress that leads to aging and disease. Red wine, in particular, has been shown to support heart health and cancer and diabetes prevention.- Serena Poon
The below are some of Carol Ofori's favourites. Which of these is your favourite?
Another benefit of wine is that it contains "resveratrol which has been researched extensively. It works to prevent damage to the blood cells, thus reducing 'bad' LDL cholesterol and preventing blood clots. These benefits are thought to help prevent coronary heart disease." Drinking before bed though may be counted as a pitfall of your favourite nightcap. Poon notes that research found that drinking before bed actually caused men to experience poor sleep quality. She suggested that you stop the wine at least three to six hours before going to bed.

For those of you who enjoy a glass or two after work, the benefits could be good for you, we think the benefits are more psychological than physical, but if research says otherwise, we will take it!
As much as it's not easy trying to find a balance in life with many things, it's important to practice moderation. Not just with the wine, but with all things. Food, exercise, and even work, finding a balance between what you enjoy and what forms part of your responsibilities can be tricky, but it is essential to your overall well-being.
