#WCW: Gonum 'Florence Nightingale' Govender helps deliver baby girl in Chatsworth
Updated | By East Coast Radio
It's stories like these that restore our faith in people...
In this day and age, nurses are our superheroes. They have stood tall and mighty during a time that threatened to break us as a community.
And for that we can truly say that they are the guardian angels of our existence. This story is just another affirmation that nurses are truly our superheroes.
Gonum Govender, a midwife at RK Khan Hospital in Chatsworth, came home after a long day and was immediately called upon by her community.
Her daughter, Jovita Govender, shared with the News24 team: "It was around 18:00 when neighbours called my mother and told her that a pregnant woman was about to give birth on the side of the road. "She didn’t have any other equipment, she had a pair of scissors in her pocket that the neighbours brought.
"My mother is a single mom who started out as a nursing assistant when I was a baby. She’s been a midwife for about 10 years now. She takes her work very seriously."
Even though she was not equipped with all the necessary equipment, the community came together to provide her with what they could, and the baby was delivered safely.
But the mother was bleeding quite dangerously. Then another nurse in the area, Sashnee Bladel, came through to assist and managed to transport the mother to RK Khan hospital with her baby.
The young mother seemed to be homeless and in a dire situation. Besides the fact that she did not have money to pay her rent, she also had nowhere to go.

Gonum is truly a hero as she performed this miraculous delivery on Florence Nightingale Drive. How fitting?
She is described as a woman who lives and breathes caring for others and plans to retire next year. Her manager shared the most wonderful words about her, and isn't that a true testament of her character?
Today we celebrate you, Gonum Govender. Thank you for helping us believe in real-life superheroes.
