WATCH: Man uses banana to threaten CIT guards

Is South Africa secretly a giant comedy show? This bizarre incident where a man uses a banana to "threaten" cash-in-transit (CIT) guards certainly raises that question.

South Africans have a unique talent for finding the lighter side of life, which is why our country boasts so many talented comedians. We choose laughter – it’s in our nature to bring joy and make others laugh.

However, there’s a fine line between being funny and crossing into inappropriate territory. A man recently had us questioning his motives when he used a banana as a "gun" to hold up CIT guards.

Whether it was a sign of mental instability or simply a strange attempt at creating content, we can’t be sure.

What we do know is that it was oddly entertaining to watch him stay in character – whatever that character was.

In the video, a Fidelity CIT van is parked on a busy street, with vendors lining the sidewalk and people going about their business.

A man stands near the front passenger-side door, holding a banana in a way that mimics a gun.

One of the CIT guards walks by, paying no attention to him. Once the guard is inside the van, however, the man raises his "banana gun" and shouts, "Open the safe!"

The person filming can't help but laugh as the man repeats his command. Then, with a smile, he runs off.

In a country where CIT heists are a serious issue, it was refreshing to see how, even amid chaos, people can still find a lighthearted moment.
