A terrifying reality for parents is realising just how many everyday objects can become safety hazards.
One mother was shocked to discover that her three-year-old had not only swallowed one of her earrings but had also pushed the other up her nose.
Sharing her experience on social media, Joy Hankins admitted she didn’t believe her daughter, Amiah, at first when she casually said, "I ate my earrings, Mom."
Thinking Amiah was just being a playful toddler, she dismissed it as a fib. But after searching her daughter’s room and finding no sign of the earrings, she began to suspect her little one might be telling the truth.
Hankins found it hard to believe when Amiah said, "I put the earring in my mouth, it went down my throat… and then I went to sleep."
But after calling the doctor and taking her daughter for an x-ray, Hankins was stunned to learn that Amiah was telling the truth – she had indeed swallowed the earring.
The scan revealed one earring in her abdomen, and that’s when Amiah casually informed her mother that the second one was in her nose.
So, we went to the hospital, not knowing if she would need immediate surgery or not. I was calm until I saw the X-ray of an earring up her nose, I thought I was going to pass out. An ENT was able to remove the earring from her nose. The one in her belly is where they believe she’ll pass it on her own. I’m just grateful that she was so confident that I had to see if it was true. I’m so grateful I listened to my daughter. She slept overnight after swallowing an earring and sticking another up her nose.
Hankins was grateful she listened to her toddler and took her for the X-ray – she couldn’t bear to imagine what might have happened if she hadn’t, especially since Amiah had slept an entire night with the earrings inside her body.
