LISTEN to Carol Ofori chat about her first kiss...

The history of kissing is quite interesting. The theory behind the evolution of kissing is rooted on the natural instinct to share food, like the way a mammal would feed her young.

Historians believe that the earliest references to kissing stems from India, with four major texts in the Vedic Sanskrit literature referencing the supposed earliest forms of kissing. Dating from 1500 B.C., these texts describe ‘kissing’ as the act of rubbing and pressing noses together.

When it comes to more than that, we can thank the Romans. Kissing was a form of showing love for friends and only if it was referred to as "French", then it was a display of passion.

"Ancient Roman culture went so far as to create laws around the act, stating that if a virgin was kissed passionately in public, she could demand full marriage rights — the Romans didn’t mess around," National Day's website explains.
