Throwback Thursday to Durban's The Wheel

Let's travel back in time to when visiting the mall was a family affair. It wasn't just about shopping; it was something of an event.

There was once an iconic mall in Durban called, The Wheel. The Wheel got its unique name from the fact that an actual Ferris wheel was built onto the front of the mall's building.

The mall was opened in 1989 and wasn't just a mall, but an attraction.

A big part of its attraction status was that it had the largest cinema in the Southern Hemisphere at the time.

There were eleven cinemas with around 7,000 seats - a true icon from Durban's history. The Wheel was a place that didn't have to earn its popularity but left a clear mark on Durban's heart of hearts.

Sadly, its popularity was short-lived. According to Daniel Osch, it was due to the crime increase in the area which forced residents to move out.
